THE BRENNAN SOCIETY CELEBRATES FIFTH ANNIVERSARY

tompic

Tom Guild

The Brennan Society will hold their fifth Anniversary Celebration at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday September 6 at Johnnie’s (33 E. 33rd in Edmond). Justice Tom Guild will speak on Democrats Abroad and Mexican Politics. It will be our Fifth Anniversary Celebration of the Creation of the Brennan Society.

The Brennan Society made a huge difference again! Susan McCann and Tom Guild, representing Change Oklahoma, the Brennan Institute, and the Brennan Society, along with Tim Mauldin, worked for four months to make this important change a reality, They called and e-mailed delegates, prepared information and placed it on the chairs of convention delegates, and spoke out in favor of including registered 260,000+ Independents in the Democratic primaries at county, district, and state conventions.

They also lobbied hard in person and via social media. They set the table and made it safe for elected officials and people running for or serving in party offices to join in the effort to make party more inclusive and more diverse. They are excited and thrilled that their efforts paid off and party delegates by an overwhelming margin voted for both a resolution and a change in party bylaws to include registered Independents, more than a quarter million Oklahoma voters, in our nominating process.

This is an important step in making the Democratic Party in Oklahoma once again competitive at the local and state levels and in congressional races.

Tom Guild says he is very proud of his party and optimistic about its future in our state. David Glover and Melody Ball also worked with them and provided data and elbow grease to get the job done. Ultimately, they were joined by thousands of folks weighing in on social media and hundreds of Democrats who held the decision in their hands. I’m proud that we had the courage to make this important change.

Tom says they applaud new state party chair Mark Hammons and vice chair Connie Johnson, the Democratic Caucuses in the state house and senate, and former Governors David Walters, George Nigh, and Brad Henry for lending their support to this successful team effort.
